The cursed fort of Rajasthan
Bhangarh Fort was built in the sixteenth century in what is now Rajasthan, India, near the Sariska region. Its ruins include gateways, temples, market streets, havelis, and a palace complex set against the Aravalli hills. The site is historically significant on its own, but its modern fame comes from stories that call it one of India's most haunted places.
Two legends are usually attached to Bhangarh. One says a holy man warned that no building should cast a shadow over his dwelling; when the warning was ignored, the town was doomed. Another tells of a tantric who cursed the settlement after being rejected by a princess. Whether treated as folklore or tourism mythology, the curse story has become inseparable from the fort's identity.
Bhangarh's power comes from the overlap of visible ruin and invisible warning. The fort can be explored as a historic site, but its empty streets and broken palace walls are still read through the curse stories that made it famous.
