Kuldhara

The village that left

Kuldhara is an abandoned village near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India. Established centuries ago by Paliwal Brahmins, it was deserted by the early nineteenth century. Historians have suggested drought, water scarcity, earthquake damage, taxation pressure, or other social causes, but folklore offers a more dramatic story.

In the most common legend, a powerful official desired a village girl and threatened the community. Rather than submit, the villagers left overnight, cursing Kuldhara so no one could ever resettle it. Over time, the roofless houses, empty lanes, and desert silence helped turn the village into a haunted tourist site.

Kuldhara's abandoned lanes leave room for both history and legend. The cause of the village's desertion remains debated, but the curse story is what many visitors hear first as they walk through sandstone ruins that still feel abruptly interrupted.

Kuldhara is commonly visited from Jaisalmer as a heritage/haunted village stop. Check local opening rules, avoid entering unstable structures, and respect the ruins.
