Between 1764 and 1767, a wolf-like animal killed close to a hundred people across the rural Margeride mountains, provoked a royal hunting campaign under Louis XV, and left behind a small pilgrim town so thoroughly built around the legend that you can walk the actual attack territory on marked trails today.

Château de Gisors
In March 1946 the castle's gardener walked into the town hall at Gisors and reported what he said he had found after years of digging under the castle mound at night: a stone chapel underground, sarcophagi along its walls, and 30 metal chests stacked in the nave in columns of 10. His tunnel was filled in. France's culture minister sent official excavators in the 1960s and they found nothing at all.

Rennes-le-Château
On November 5, 1910, an ecclesiastical court sentenced Bérenger Saunière for trafficking in masses. He had taken money for more masses than he could possibly say. That is the documented answer to where his money came from, and it has never displaced the treasure story.
