Derinkuyu Underground City
In 1963, a resident renovating a house found a passage behind a wall that led into a complex descending roughly 85 meters across eight levels. Byzantine Christians expanded it as a refuge during the Arab-Byzantine wars, and it is estimated to have sheltered up to 20,000 people.

Göbekli Tepe
A hilltop in southeastern Turkey where people who had no pottery, no farming, and no wheel quarried and raised carved limestone pillars around 9600 BCE. A survey team reached it in 1963, wrote it up as a medieval cemetery, and moved on.

Hierapolis Plutonium (Pluto's Gate)
Strabo reported throwing sparrows into the Plutonium at Hierapolis and watching them die at once, while the eunuch priests of Cybele leaned over the same opening. A 2019 study measured up to 91 percent carbon dioxide in a grotto below the temple of Pluto, and the site opened to visitors in June 2022.

Colossal stone heads ring a man-made mountain summit in southeastern Turkey, built by a king who declared himself a god. Beneath the 50-meter gravel tumulus, his tomb has never been found.
