A dense forest on Mount Fuji's northwestern flank, historically associated with yūrei folklore and now requiring unusually careful, respectful treatment because of its modern reputation.

Hashima Island
About 5,259 people lived here in 1959, which made it the most densely populated place on earth. Mitsubishi closed the mine in January 1974 and the last residents were gone by April. In July 2021 the World Heritage Committee recorded its deep regret that Japan had not told the full history of the Koreans made to work here.

For sixteen years, Japan erased this island from its own maps while a secret factory produced thousands of tons of poison gas there. Today it is overrun by tame rabbits, and the ruins still stand.
