Ancient Mystery

Roopkund Lake

A remote Himalayan glacial lake where hundreds of human bones emerge from the ice, raising questions that science has only partly answered.

Field Guide Entry

Skeleton Lake

Roopkund Lake lies high in the Indian Himalayas in Uttarakhand. It is famous for the human skeletal remains found around its shallow glacial basin, visible when snow and ice melt. The remains were rediscovered in 1942, and early theories ranged from a lost army to epidemic, ritual death, or a catastrophic storm.

Scientific work has answered some questions while opening others. Some remains show head injuries consistent with large hailstones, matching local pilgrimage legends of a party struck down by a divine storm. Later genetic research complicated the story by suggesting that the dead may include people from different groups and time periods, not a single event.

Roopkund's mystery is material, not only folkloric. Bones, altitude, pilgrimage, weather, genetics, and local song all point toward a story that science has sharpened but not fully settled.
