Poveglia Island

The island Venice left behind

Poveglia sits between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon. Its documented history includes settlement, abandonment during conflict, use as a quarantine station for ships and passengers, and later conversion of buildings for institutional medical use before closure in the twentieth century.

The haunted reputation grew from that history. Popular accounts describe plague victims, mass burials, a derelict hospital, and ghost stories surrounding patients and staff. Some versions exaggerate numbers or add unsupported details, but the island's real history of isolation, disease control, and abandonment is eerie enough to explain why it became known as a forbidden ghost island.

Poveglia's legends often outrun the documented record, but the island does not need exaggeration to feel haunted. Its isolation, quarantine history, abandoned buildings, and restricted access have made it one of the Venetian Lagoon's most unsettling silhouettes.

Poveglia is not a normal public tourist stop. Do not attempt unauthorized access; view from the lagoon only through legal boat routes or follow any official future public-access guidance.
