Origin Story

Kenny Veach was an experienced desert hiker who posted his solo treks around southern Nevada to a small YouTube channel under the name snakebitmgee. In 2014, in a comment thread about strange experiences near military land, he described hiking in the Sheep Range north of Las Vegas some years earlier and finding a cave entrance shaped like a perfect letter M. As he approached, he wrote, his entire body began to vibrate, intensifying the closer he got, until he turned around and left. Challenged by commenters to prove it, Veach filmed a return hike but could not relocate the cave. On November 10, 2014, he set out alone to search again. He never came back.

Evidence & Claims

Search and rescue teams combed the area for weeks. His white Honda CR-V was found at the trailhead. On November 22, searchers found his cell phone sitting near the entrance of an abandoned mine shaft in the Sheep Range. No trace of Veach himself, and no M-shaped cave, has ever been found, despite years of follow-up searches by volunteers and YouTubers retracing his route through the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, terrain that borders the Nevada Test and Training Range. The case became one of the internet's most discussed wilderness disappearances precisely because Veach documented his own search for the thing that may have killed him.

Skeptical Explanations

The mundane explanations are strong and deserve stating plainly. The Sheep Range is brutal terrain, riddled with unmarked mine shafts, and Veach hiked it alone; a fall, hidden by the landscape itself, requires no mystery. His girlfriend later said he had struggled with depression and had spoken of ending his life somewhere he would never be found, and some who knew the case believe that is what happened. Skeptics also note the vibrating cave account was posted years after the supposed encounter and was never corroborated. What keeps the case open in the public imagination is the unresolved remainder: the phone left at the mine, the body never found, and a cave that either never existed or is still out there.

The search area lies inside the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, public land accessed via the Corn Creek Visitor Center off US 95 north of Las Vegas. There is no marked site, and the exact location of Veach's route is not established. Do not attempt to retrace it: this is remote, waterless desert scattered with unstable abandoned mine shafts, and people searching for the M Cave have themselves required rescue. Several volunteer searches have ended in emergency callouts. Treat the refuge's marked trails as the limit.
