The Za'ab left in 1968 and the town stayed where they left it: coral block houses, a mosque, a souq, wind towers standing over rooms with no roofs. Why they left is told three ways, and the version involving jinn is the one that travels. It is the last pre-oil pearling town in the Gulf still standing in anything like its original form.
