Spirits Bay (Kapowairua)
Kapowairua, at the eastern end of Piwhane / Spirits Bay, takes its name from words Te Ara attributes to the ancestor Tōhē: grasp my spirit, should I die. In Māori tradition it is also where one of two pathways of departing spirits to Te Rerenga Wairua begins. In the late 1960s the Crown pressured Ngāti Kuri to leave their settlement here to build a public campground, and a 2015 Act vested the land in Ngāti Kuri's trustees, who now run it.

At the northern tip of New Zealand, where two oceans collide, Māori tradition holds that the spirits of the dead travel to an 800-year-old pōhutukawa tree and descend its roots to begin the journey home.
