Baron Empain Palace
A Hindu Cambodian temple built in reinforced concrete on the desert road out of Cairo between 1907 and 1911, for the Belgian industrialist who was building Heliopolis around it. It stood empty from the 1950s, collected stories about a woman falling from the balcony, and was raided by police in 1997.

Built as the tomb of the pharaoh Khufu around 2560 BCE and the tallest structure on earth for nearly 4,000 years. Cosmic-ray imaging has since found two spaces inside it that nobody has entered.

Zar at Makan
Zar is a rite for living with a spirit rather than driving it out, performed for a century and more by women, mostly for women, in Egyptian houses and courtyards. Um Sameh, Um Hassan, and Nour el Sabah are among the last practitioners who still play it, and they do so on a published schedule at an address in downtown Cairo, for the price of a cinema ticket.
