Sandy Irvine and the Rongbuk Glacier
Andrew Irvine was last seen high on the north ridge of Everest on June 8, 1924, going strongly toward the summit. A hundred years later a boot with his name stitched into the sock came out of the glacier below.

The Longyou Caves
In 1992 four farmers in a Zhejiang village pumped out a pond they had always assumed was bottomless and found a hand-carved chamber underneath. Twenty-four of them were found nearby, cut into sandstone with the same parallel chisel marks throughout, at least 2,000 years old. No text in the Chinese record, which is one of the most complete written records on earth, mentions them at all.

The Yeren of Shennongjia
In 1976 six forestry officials reported a tailless, red-haired animal on a mountain road in Hubei. The Chinese Academy of Sciences put about 100 people into the forest to find it, and they came back with a primate nobody knew was living there.

Villain Hitting at the Canal Road Flyover
Under a road bridge in one of the densest shopping districts on earth, about ten women sit at folding tables and beat paper effigies of your enemies with a shoe. It costs around 50 Hong Kong dollars and takes about five minutes. The government lists the practice as intangible cultural heritage and has separately confirmed that it licenses none of it.
