The desert that swallowed signals
The Zone of Silence, or Zona del Silencio, is the popular name for an area near the Bolsón de Mapimí in northern Mexico. Its legend claims that radio signals behave strangely there, compasses fail, meteorites fall, and UFOs appear over the desert.
The documented anchor is a 1970 U.S. Athena test missile that veered off course and crashed in the region. Recovery teams entered the desert to retrieve contaminated debris, and the event helped turn the area into a magnet for rumors. Later writers folded in claims about magnetic anomalies, alien visitors, and a triangle-like relationship with other mysterious zones.
The strongest part of the Zone of Silence is not proof of paranormal activity, but the way a real Cold War-era accident became desert mythology. Any visit also passes through a fragile landscape where conservation matters more than chasing rumors off-road.
