Skinwalker Ranch

A 512-acre ranch in Utah's Uintah Basin where decades of reported UFO sightings, cattle mutilations, and unexplained phenomena drew Indigenous oral tradition, private investigators, and eventually a Pentagon-linked research program.

Field Guide Entry

Origin Story

Ute and Navajo oral tradition has long described shapeshifting figures, known as skinwalkers, moving through the Uintah Basin, long before the ranch took its modern name. The Sherman family, who owned the property through the 1990s, went public in 1996 with accounts of strange lights, disappearing livestock, and structures that seemed to move. Later that year the ranch was purchased by aerospace entrepreneur Robert Bigelow's National Institute for Discovery Science for study. Real-estate developer Brandon Fugal bought the property in 2016 and has continued private research there since.

Evidence & Claims

Reported phenomena include orbs of light, cattle found mutilated without obvious predation, structures and craft witnesses describe appearing and vanishing, and elevated radiation or magnetic readings claimed by some investigators. In 2017 the New York Times reported on a Pentagon program, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, whose personnel had reportedly taken an interest in the ranch.

Skeptical Explanations

No claim from the ranch has been independently replicated or published in a peer-reviewed setting. Skeptics point to ordinary predator activity and decomposition patterns to explain mutilations, atmospheric and lighting effects for aerial phenomena, and a small, repeating set of witnesses for most first-hand accounts.

Visiting Information

Privately owned and closed to the public, with active security -- there's no legal way to visit the ranch itself.
