Rendlesham Forest Incident

A series of reported unexplained lights and an alleged landed object in Rendlesham Forest, near two RAF/USAF bases in Suffolk, England, over several nights in December 1980, one of the most thoroughly documented UFO cases in the UK.

Field Guide Entry

Origin Story

Over the nights of December 26-28, 1980, US Air Force personnel stationed at RAF Woodbridge reported strange lights in the adjoining forest, with some servicemen describing a triangular craft and radiation readings at the site. A memo on the incident, written by deputy base commander Lt. Col. Charles Halt, was later released under freedom-of-information requests.

Evidence & Claims

Multiple witnesses gave independent statements, and the Halt memo describes lights "manoeuvring through the trees" and elevated radiation readings at marks found in the forest floor. The case is sometimes called "Britain's Roswell" due to the volume of official documentation involved.

Skeptical Explanations

Proposed explanations include the nearby Orford Ness lighthouse beam refracting through fog and trees, a bright meteor or fireball seen on one of the nights, and the disorienting effect of military personnel walking unfamiliar forest terrain at night, though some investigators consider the case still unresolved.

Visiting Information

Rendlesham Forest is a public Forestry England site with a marked "UFO Trail" walking route past the incident locations, with interpretive signage. Free to enter, parking available off the B1084.
