The hill behind the trials

Pendle Hill rises over Lancashire, England, near the villages tied to the 1612 Pendle witch trials. Twelve people from the surrounding area were accused of witchcraft; ten were eventually executed after trials at Lancaster Assizes. The case is unusually well documented through Thomas Potts's contemporary account, The Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster.

Pendle's mystery is not that the historical record is missing. The unsettling part is how a legal proceeding, local feuds, poverty, religion, and fear combined to turn neighbors into accused witches. Over centuries, the hill became the symbol of the case, drawing walkers, historians, folklore fans, and Halloween travelers.
