Field Guide Entry

The mountain beneath the mountain

Mount Shasta is a major volcanic peak in Northern California and a landmark for hikers, climbers, Indigenous traditions, New Age movements, and UFO lore. The mountain's modern legendarium includes stories of Lemurian survivors living in hidden tunnels or a crystalline city beneath the peak, often called Telos in later spiritual writing.

The Lemurian layer took shape through nineteenth- and early twentieth-century occult writing and grew through groups that folded Mount Shasta into broader beliefs about lost continents, ascended masters, and hidden civilizations. UFO stories followed naturally, helped by dramatic lenticular clouds that form over the mountain and are often described by believers as disguised craft.

Mount Shasta is less a single mystery than a meeting point for many belief systems. To some visitors it is a sacred landscape; to others, an alien waypoint, a lost city, a portal, or simply a wilderness icon that seems to invite extraordinary stories.
