Montauk Project / Camp Hero

A conspiracy theory claiming secret US government experiments in time travel and mind control were conducted at Camp Hero, a real decommissioned military installation in Montauk, New York, now a public state park.

Field Guide Entry

Origin Story

The Montauk Project legend originated with a series of books by Preston Nichols beginning in 1992, claiming that Cold War-era experiments, including alleged time travel and psychological warfare research, took place at Camp Hero, a former Air Force station with a large radar installation on the eastern tip of Long Island.

Evidence & Claims

Proponents point to the site's real history as a classified military radar facility (in operation roughly 1942-1980) and its large, abandoned-looking AN/FPS-35 radar tower as suggestive evidence, layering speculative claims onto the base's genuine secrecy.

Skeptical Explanations

Camp Hero's documented history is that of an ordinary, if classified, Cold War radar and coastal defense installation; no credible evidence supports the time-travel or mind-control claims, which originated entirely from Nichols's books rather than any verified military record.

Visiting Information

Camp Hero is now Camp Hero State Park, open to the public with hiking trails past the old radar tower and bunkers; the tower itself is fenced off but visible from the trail.
