A castle over the pit
Houska Castle stands near Blatce in the Czech Republic. Built in the thirteenth century, it is architecturally significant for its Gothic chapel and preserved medieval spaces, but it is best known internationally for one idea: that the castle was constructed over a gateway to hell.
The folklore claims a bottomless hole once opened beneath the chapel. Stories say prisoners were lowered into it and returned aged or terrified, and that the castle's walls were designed inward to contain whatever lived below. Later legends added demons, a headless horse, a hooded figure, and occult experiments during the Nazi occupation.
The castle's real medieval history is strange enough on its own, but the "hell gate" legend is what gives Houska its modern pull. Visitors come for stone walls and Gothic rooms, then leave with the harder-to-shake image of a chapel sealing something below.
