Unexplained balls of light have appeared over a remote Norwegian valley since the 1930s, drawing one of the only continuously operating scientific monitoring stations ever built specifically to study an unidentified aerial phenomenon.

Origin Story

Residents of Hessdalen, a sparsely populated valley in Norway's Trøndelag region, have reported strange lights in the sky since at least the 1930s, but sightings spiked dramatically between 1981 and 1984, when locals described unexplained spheres of white, yellow, or blue-white light, sometimes hovering, sometimes moving at high speed, as often as multiple times a week. The wave drew enough national attention that a team of Norwegian researchers and engineers launched Project Hessdalen in 1983, one of the first formal scientific efforts anywhere to study a recurring light phenomenon in the field rather than from witness testimony alone.

Evidence & Claims

During a dedicated field investigation in early 1984, instruments recorded 53 separate light events, with multiple independent sensors, including radar and magnetometers, registering the same events simultaneously, ruling out simple misidentification for at least some sightings. An automated monitoring station, built in 1998 and still operating today, continuously runs cameras, radar, and spectrum analyzers, logging 10 to 20 confirmed events most years. Recorded lights have appeared on radar while invisible to ground observers, moved at speeds researchers have estimated in the tens of thousands of kilometers per hour, and registered measurable electromagnetic disturbances.

Skeptical Explanations

Researchers who've studied the valley for decades remain divided on a single cause: leading theories include ionized dust clouds tied to the valley's mineral deposits and geological strain, ball-lightning-like plasma phenomena, or atmospheric optical effects amplified by local topography. No proposed natural mechanism has yet accounted for every recorded characteristic, particularly the radar-only detections and magnetic disturbances, which is precisely why the monitoring station, almost unique in the world for studying a light phenomenon in situ rather than after the fact, is still running.

Visiting Information

Visit Hessdalen, the local tourism office, runs a seasonal "UFO Camp" in the valley with cabins and guided light-watching sessions; the automated research station itself is not open to the public. Contact visithessdalen.no before traveling.
