Field Guide Entry

Origin Story

Reports of a large, foul-smelling, ape-like creature around Fouke, in southwest Arkansas's Boggy Creek bottomlands, date to at least the early 1970s, though local oral tradition describes earlier sightings. The 1972 docudrama "The Legend of Boggy Creek" dramatized local witness accounts and brought the creature national attention.

Evidence & Claims

Witnesses describe a seven-foot, heavily built, bipedal creature with matted reddish-brown hair, three-toed footprints, and a distinctive odor. The town of Fouke has embraced the legend commercially, including a themed gift shop ("Monster Mart") along the highway.

Skeptical Explanations

Skeptics point to black bears, which can appear bipedal at a distance and leave ambiguous tracks in soft mud, along with the amplifying effect of a hit film on a small, sparsely documented rural area where few sightings were ever independently corroborated.
