Origin Story
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was founded in 1954 by twelve member states as one of Europe's first major joint scientific institutions; it now operates the Large Hadron Collider, a 27-kilometer particle accelerator buried beneath the France-Switzerland border that led to the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson. In 2004, the Government of India gifted CERN a two-meter bronze statue of Shiva Nataraja, the "cosmic dancer" form symbolizing creation and destruction, commemorating India's decades-long scientific collaboration with the lab.
Evidence & Claims
Online theories circulating heavily on social media claim the Large Hadron Collider opens portals or wormholes to other dimensions, or even "Hell," sometimes pointing to the Shiva statue's creation-and-destruction symbolism as supposed corroborating evidence. A related, widely shared theory holds that each time the LHC runs, it shifts people into a slightly different parallel timeline, supposedly explaining the "Mandela Effect," the phenomenon of large groups sharing the same false memory.
Skeptical Explanations
CERN physicists have publicly and repeatedly rejected the portal and dimension-shifting claims as having no basis in the lab's actual research. Mainstream psychologists attribute the Mandela Effect itself to ordinary memory fallibility, confabulation and source confusion that happens at the scale of the internet, and note that documented false-memory phenomena predate the LHC's 2008 startup by decades; the term "Mandela Effect" itself wasn't even coined until around 2010, undermining any causal link to a machine that was already running by then.
Visiting Information
On CERN's secured grounds -- the statue isn't visible without an official guided tour or visitor-center booking. CERN's free public Science Gateway exhibitions are open Tuesday through Sunday and are the place to start arranging a visit.
