Origin Story

A local historian collected the earliest known account from 1936, describing a large wolf-like animal walking on its hind legs. The story resurfaced in 1989 when a Walworth County resident reported a similar creature to the Week newspaper, sparking a wave of further reports compiled by journalist and researcher Linda Godfrey over the following decade.

Evidence & Claims

Dozens of witnesses describe a large, muscular, canine-like creature, often seen crossing roads at night or standing upright near farmland. Several reports mention disturbed livestock or torn fencing in the same areas.

Skeptical Explanations

Wildlife biologists point to mangy or hairless coyotes and wolf-dog hybrids, which can appear unusually large and oddly proportioned, as a likely source for many sightings. The story's spread through regional newspapers in the late 1980s is often cited as having shaped how later witnesses described what they saw.
